Biocare Medical Special Stains

The "Masterpiece Line" of Special Stains
This is a line of Spectacular Special Stains, which deliver superb color and detail for a definitive pathological diagnosis. Appropriately named "Masterpiece" because of their brilliant detail and vivid colors these kits show intense coloration. The complete Masterpiece Line of products has been created for routine histology, in order to provide a product that will improve the quality of the end result, promoting ease of use and stability.

Trichrome (1-Step) (Modified Gomori’s)
An extremely stable formulation which produces results like no other 1-step Trichrome (almost like Masson’s Trichrome) Muscle and cytoplasm stain a brilliant red and connective tissue fibers stain a vivid blue green. The Weigerts’ Iron hematoxylin has a stabilizer incorporated to make it last several days longer than most other iron hematoxylins.

Alcian Blue (pH 2.5) (Modified Mowry’s)
This special formula has biocide ingredients which replace thymol, so there is no unpleasant odor. Our stain solutions have a stabilizer incorporated, which allows storage at room temperature for up to 12 months. Stains mucopolysaccharides and glyco-proteins blue, while other selective tissue stains pink.

Congo Red (1-Step) Amyloid (Modified Puchtler’s)
This formulation does not require the mixing of sodium hydroxide with alkaline alcohol and Congo Red solution. Biocare’s Congo Red requires pretreatment in 95% alcohol for 5 seconds vs. 20 minutes in alkaline alcohol (the standard Puchtler’s) dramatically reducing procedure time. This modification produces a more concentrated solution which shows better amyloid staining than Puchtler’s method and also reduces false positives. This working Congo Red solution is stable for 12 months.

Mucicarmine (Modified Southgate’s)
A valuable technique to demonstrate mucin from epithelial sources, the carmine stains the mucin a deep rose to red. (Connective tissue mucin stains poorly). CAT Hematoxylin vs. Iron hematoxylin is used to stain the nuclei and the Tartrazine yellow is the counterstain—this combination gives superior nuclear results, as well as giving a Weigerts’-like appearance. Decreased staining time (30 minutes vs. 60 for other Mucicarmines) results in time savings.

Periodic Acid-Schiff (Modified Lillie’s Cold Schiff)
This Periodic Acid-Schiff’s reagent is stable for 12 months and requires less staining time than other kits. This procedure uses a hot tap water rinse which intensifies the Schiff’s reaction and reduces procedure time. PAS with Fast Light Green counterstain will demonstrate fungi.

Reticulum (Modified Gomori’s)
This reticulum stain procedure has been fine-tuned to demonstrate superior detail. The stain time is faster than most other stain kits, reducing tech time. Ammoniacal silver solution impregnates the reticular fibers which are found throughout the body, particularly in the liver, lymph node, spleen and kidney.
